Positive Affirmations To Combat Pain
Making a habit of using positive affirmations can be a powerful tool for re-programming your subconscious. This
makes all the difference in the world to the way you perceive pain. Practicing positive affirmations for pain
control is rather similar to creative visualization. Instead of
visualizing you are affirming something. (If you think that pain isn't controlled by your brain read this:
Pain Theory)
Positive affirmations are quick and easy to do wherever you are and of course no-one will know what you are
doing! These tools all work to change the way your subconscious mind interprets the world.
Don't use a positive affirmation that is unbelievable to you. It isn't going to be believable to say for example
" I am completely pain free" if you are hurting. What you need to do is to say something positive that you can
believe.
Why Affirmations Work
The power of positive affirmations comes from the fact that our subconscious minds don't differentiate between
truth and fiction. Our minds can only know anything about our world by the messages it receives. Our brains
interpret reality by means of our thoughts and emotions. What then is reality? That is an interesting thought that
we have no room to explore here.
This means you can influence your brain. You can make a difference to the perception of a painful stimulus by
thinking differently. Believe it or not repeating a chosen phrase many times each day, even if you do not
completely believe it, can change things.
A positive affirmation can, if practiced regularly, bring about pain relief. It may sound unlikely and a little
flaky, but it really happens. In the 19th Century Dr. Emile Couè was credited with curing thousands of his patients
by the simple means of getting them to repeat the phrase: "Every day in every way I am getting better and better
".
This is believable isn't it? It doesn't ask you to believe in a miracle, just that each day you are improving a
very little.
Saying your chosen positive affirmation many times a day is something you can do for yourself, even if you don't
feel up to doing more. Using positive affirmations for pain control makes really good sense. You have nothing to
lose by trying it.
How To Make Affirmations Your Own
If you would like to start affirming the first thing to do is think about what it is you really want to achieve
and that is not so way out that you will not be able to believe in at even a little. Having decided on that make a
clear and positive statement about it. Take some time to phrase your affirmations in such a way that your brain
gets the right message.
Your brain thinks in pictures. When choosing a phrase for affirmations choose one that you can put some feeling
into. Your feelings are another input that encourages your mind to take it on board. For example if you have
lower back pain, your statement could be something like this: "My lower back is getting stronger and more
comfortable every day."
It is extremely important that your statement is couched in positive terms. If you say, for instance, "I am not
in pain", your brain sees an image of you in pain, it doesn't interpret the "not" word. So leave out the negative
images.
Some people like to write their positive affirmation statements down and put them in places where they will see
them frequently. For example you could write it on a card and use it for a book mark, stick it on your computer
monitor or your car dashboard. Where could you put your positive affirmations so that you will see them
often?
If you don't want to have to explain it to every one else you can find private places. For example write it down
in your diary or on a tiny post it note which you stick on your cell phone. You could even just write a
trigger word that reminds you to say your positive daily affirmations every time you see it.
Give it a try. Its free and it doesn't hurt.
